Precious metals and gems
All of the creations from Zoë Pook Jewellery are available in ‘Green' metal - ethically mined gold, platinum and silver. These precious metals are sourced from ecologically and ethically sound mines from around the world. One such example is Oro Verde, which has an exemplary record for producing metal without the use of harsh chemicals and in partnership with the surrounding communities. Their Certified Green Gold Program in Choco (Colombia), is the first of its kind in the world. It seeks to reverse poverty and the devastating damages caused to this unique ecosystem (a biodiversity hot-spot) by out of control, large-scale mining.
The ancestoral owners of the Choco Bioregion use artisanal mining practices passed down through generations to sustainably pick precious metals from their land. The Green Gold Corporation then buys the metal from the miners, who receive a premium for gold and platinum and benefit from social and environmental programs collectively decided upon by the Choco Bioregion families.
Zoë sources ethical gems from a variety of countries around the world, for example rubies from a mining co-operative in Tanzania and sapphires from fair trade mines in Sri Lanka and Malawi. All gems come from known and trusted retailers, fair trade dealers or direct from the mines themselves. The miners are guaranteed a fair price for their work and often local social and environmental projects are financial beneficiaries of the gem trade. Ethical diamonds from various countries (including Canada and Australia) come with full certification.
